Ashlee Takes on a Weighty Subject: Jessica Simpson
Ashlee Simpson-Wentz has a bone to pick with those who say her sister is looking a bit meatier than usual.
"I am completely disgusted by the headlines concerning my sister's weight," Simpson wrote Tuesday on her website. "A week after the inauguration and with such a feeling of hope in the air for our country, I find it completely embarrassing and belittling to all women to read about a woman's weight or figure as a headline on Fox News."
Sure enough, Fox's website reported today that Jessica Simpson shocked fans Sunday at Radio 99.9 Kiss Country's Chili Cookoff in Pembroke Pines, Fla., with her "noticeably fuller figure" and had apparently "eased up on her fitness regimen a bit."
Hmmph, says Ashlee.
"All women come in different shapes, sizes, and forms and just because you're a celebrity, there shouldn't be a different standard," the younger Simpson sis continued.
"Is this something you would say to your wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, or even a friend? I seriously doubt it. How can we expect teenage girls to love and respect themselves in an environment where we criticize a size 2 figure? Now we can focus on the things that really matter."
Well, some of us can.
In response to the hullabaloo caused by, at worst, a pair of unflattering high-waisted jeans, Simpson's former trainer told Extra that Jessica Simpson is perfectly healthy and "has curves where a woman needs to have curves.
"We all go a little bit up and a little bit down," Hollywood trainer Harley Pasternak said. "But she's healthy. She's still sexy. She's still a beautiful woman. And I have no problem with the way she looks. I think if more people looked the way she looks now, the country would be a lot healthier."

Molly Ringwald expecting twins at 40
Molly Ringwald, who plays the anxious mother of a pregnant teen on "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," is expecting twins of her own, the actress tells PEOPLE exclusively.
It will be the second daughter and first son for Ringwald, 40, and husband Panio Gianopoulos, 33. They have a 5-year-old daughter, Mathilda Ereni. The babies are due in August.
"Secret Life's" second season airs on Monday nights on ABC Family. A spokeswoman for the show says Ringwald's pregnancy will be written into the storyline.
Her pregnancy came as exciting news on the set, says Shailene Woodley, who plays Ringwald's daughter on the show.
"Molly's first child is so gorgeous!" Woodley says. "She's got the dark hair like her Greek dad but she's got Molly's beautiful features. Whenever she brings Mathilda to the set, everybody's happy."
Ringwald starred in such teen classics as "Pretty in Pink," "The Breakfast Club," and "Sixteen Candles."
On "Secret Life," she plays the sympathetic but overwhelmed Anne Juergens – a woman reeling from her husband's affair, her mother's Alzheimer's and, most poignantly, her 15-year-old daughter's pregnancy.

Backstage Report: Kate Winslet's Got Her Nominations, er, Nomination Straight
Kate Winslet is not confused. Tina Fey is not paranoid. Sean Penn is not a jerk. And no, Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss still doesn't really want to talk about it. (Her upcoming wedding, that is. Shh.)
A rundown of the night's backstage doings—and sayings...
5:54 p.m.: "I don’t have to give a speech back here, too, do I?” asks Winslet, who either never caught her breath after winning two Globes a couple of weeks ago, or just lost it again about 20 minutes ago.
• OK, let's see if I can walk you through this: Here at the SAGs, Winslet won for The Reader as a supporting actress, and lost for Revolutionary Road as a leading actress; at the Oscars, she's nominated in the Best Actress category for The Reader. (Her work in Revolutionary Road was unnominated.) Winslet, for one, is in need of no further explanation. “No, I’m not confused," she assures me. "I’m very clear on that [her Oscar nomination]—I’m very, very happy, too."
• For those wondering, Winslet isn't a Nazi, she only plays one in The Reader. "I couldn’t relate to her at all,” Winslet says of the character. “Did I sympathize with her? No.”
• Winslet is looking purpler than Prince. Good thing then that when a reporter asks her what she likes about her dress, she replies: "The color."
• In case you missed it on the telecast, Judah Friedlander's baseball cap reads: “Most Improved.” I'm pretty sure it's meant as an ironic statement.
• The 30 Rockers win, on average, an award every 48 hours. "It feels like everybody is starting to turn on us," Tina Fey says. I'm pretty sure it's meant as a Friedlander baseball-cap statement.

• In her acceptance speech for the show, Jane Krakowski made a vintage crack about the skinny and skinnier Ally McBeal cast. I ask the brassy actress if she's afraid Calista Flockhart will come after her. "Oh, it was just a joke..." Krakowski laughs.
• I'm glad Krakowski's not worried, because as it's constituted backstage right now, the 30 Rock lineup really isn't all that, um, heavyweight. Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan are MIA.
• Morgan, like Baldwin, is on the premises. And he's liking his Actor. "It's the first thing I've ever won in my life," Morgan says at the award table. "I think I won musical chairs one time in kindergarten."
• Back on the interview stage, Fey jokes about her daughter catching 30 Rock reruns on the Internet. So, I ask, does Fey actually watch her TV show on TV? "When I’m home, I absolutely watch it on TV," she says."If not, I TiVo it." You know, just like everybody else.
• "I download it illegally from England in HD," says Friedlander, getting in the last word on the brave, new, scary network-TV business model.

6:22 p.m.: Hey, there are women in Mad Men, aren’t there? “They’re not allowed onstage,” says Jon Hamm, channeling the male chauvinism of his period show. “They’re making sandwiches,” pipes up Vincent Kartheiser, doing the same.
• For the record, the Mad Men women are still doing photo ops. They’ll join the enlightened guys onstage shortly.
• A reporter asks “the little one” for his name. Hamm steps forward: “My name’s Jon.”
• For the record, “the little one” is Aaron Hart, the 7-year-old who plays Don Draper’s son, Robert. And, for the record, no, Hart doesn’t know what he’s going to do with his Actor. Did I mention he’s 7?
• A reporter poses a serious question about the ongoing SAG contract talks. Hamm, who just can't help himself tonight, looks down to the little one: “Aaron, do you want to take that?”
• I ask Hamm a more serious question about his hair. It’s just not very Don Draper-like tonight (nor was it at the Globes), and I want to know if he’s making a statement, although I fear it may have sounded to Hamm as if I wanted to know if it was his hair. “It’s hair,” he says, almost as perplexed as I am. “I don’t know. It’s hair.”
• In my defense, there is a difference between free-flowing Jon Hamm hair and slicked-down Don Draper hair. Explains Hamm: “Once it [Don Draper hair] gets put in place, it literally does not move.”
• What about the pending nuptials of Elisabeth Moss and Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen? Are Moss’ castmates getting invites? “This is awkward. This is really awkward,” she says, yes, awkwardly. “I’m trying to keep it very private. But I will have everyone I love there.”

• John Adams’ Laura Linney has to offer a little wave to get the attention of reporters. In a tug-of-war between the umpteenth Linney press conference of award season, and Gary Oldman’s teary acceptance speech for Heath Ledger (now playing on the TV), Oldman and Ledger win.
7:14 p.m: Quick quiz: Who’s the more press-friendly star? Down-to-earth Meryl Streep, humble Hugh Laurie, perky Sally Field or Dark Lord Sean Penn? Tonight the answer is, shockingly enough, Penn, who, unlike the other three, does not pass on the press conference.
• Old pal Penn stands, hands in pockets, sans statue, holding court on whether he had reservations about playing Milk’s Harvey Milk. “No,” says Penn. That's it. He says, "No." Look, I never said it was a very interesting—or long—story.
• On the day Slumdog Milliionaire received 10 Oscar nominations, its cast and director Danny Boyle were, in true fable fashion, in Mumbai for the film’s premiere there. “Danny had tears in his eyes,” Anil Kapoor, who plays the harsh taskmaster of a game-show host, tells us. “It [was] unreal. We just couldn’t believe it.”
• Slumdog star Dev Patel, all of 18, still can’t believe it. “Walking the red carpet, I’m seeing people who won Oscars before I ever contemplated being an actor,” he says. “My first love was Kate Winslet. And she knew who I was!”
Slumdog Millionaire, Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor Kevin Winter/Getty Images
• No, Winslet hasn't won an Oscar (yet), but in case Patel thinks she has, I don't think I should break it to him right now.
• Kapoor is having a very good night. “I must thank him,” he says, pointing to costar Irrfan Khan, who plays the police interrogator. “He introduced me to Angelina Jolie.” (Khan worked with Jolie in A Mighty Heart.)
• Sure, respect from your acting peers is nice, but respect from Regis Philbin? Now we're talking. “He just praised me,” Kapoor says when I ask him if he’d had a confab with the American Who Wants to Be a Millionaire man. “Coming from him, that’s huge.”
• As it turns out, Philbin has his own Slumdog dream. “I wish I could be like [you]—slightly nasty to my contestants,” Kapoor says Philbin told him.

A-Listers Shine at the SAG Awards
As all of Hollywood's biggest stars gather for what's become almost a mini-Oscars, all eyes are on the big dogs at the Screen Actors Guild Awards to see who will get an extra boost of momentum heading into the Academy Awards next month.
Just three days before the SAG Awards, the Oscar acting categories came out virtually in sync with the guild picks, with 18 out of 20 performers competing for the same prizes at both shows.
The lead-acting categories are almost identical for the two ceremonies, with the same people in the running. The only difference: Kate Winslet is nominated as best actress by SAG for "Revolutionary Road," while Oscar voters picked her in that category for her other 2008 drama, "The Reader."
Among other lead-acting nominees for SAG and the Oscars: Meryl Streep for "Doubt"; Anne Hathaway for "Rachel Getting Married"; Sean Penn for "Milk"; Mickey Rourke for "The Wrestler"; and a Hollywood power couple, Brad Pitt for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and Angelina Jolie for "Changeling."
The two supporting categories each have only one difference between the two shows. For supporting actress at SAG, Winslet was nominated for "The Reader," but her slot at the Oscars was taken by Marisa Tomei for "The Wrestler." Dev Patel of "Slumdog Millionaire" had a SAG supporting-actor nomination, but he missed out at the Oscars; Michael Shannon of "Revolutionary Road" grabbed a spot instead.
SAG supporting-actress nominee Taraji P. Henson, who's also nominated for an Oscar for her work in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," was among the first stars to arrive. Henson signed autographs for fans and posed for photos before talking to media on the red carpet.
"The fans are why I am who I am," Henson said. "If I don't show love to the fans, they won't show love to me."
The late Heath Ledger loomed large at last year's ceremony, his death coming just five days before the SAG Awards. Actors spoke reverently of him, and Daniel Day-Lewis dedicated his best-actor win for "There Will Be Blood" to Ledger.
This time, Ledger is viewed as a near lock to win the supporting-actor honor for his ferocious reinvention of Batman villain the Joker in "The Dark Knight."
Other SAG supporting-actor contenders include Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis for "Doubt"; Robert Downey Jr. for "Tropic Thunder"; Penelope Cruz for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"; and Josh Brolin for "Milk."
Nominated for overall cast performance are four of the five best-picture Oscar contenders: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "Milk" and "Slumdog Millionaire." The fifth SAG cast nomination went to "Doubt," while "The Reader" has the fifth Oscar best-picture spot.
While individual categories at SAG are a solid forecast for who might win at the Academy Awards, the overall-cast category has a spotty record at predicting the Oscars.
"No Country for Old Men" won at both SAG and the Oscars last year. But winners in those categories have lined up at both shows just six out of 13 years since SAG added the cast honor.
Airing live on TNT and TBS, the 15th annual SAG Awards will include a lifetime-achievement honor for James Earl Jones.

Miss America 2009
The finals and crowning of 2009 Miss America pageant will televise live on the TLC network on Saturday night in Las Vegas. With significant scholarships awarded to the winner, the coveted title will be competed among 52 candidates. The champion will represent the United States to run for Miss Universe this year. It's the first time for four contestants in top 15 to be voted into the pageant finals by audience of "Miss America: Countdown to the Crown." The first pageant dated back to 1921 as an Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce initiative to extend the local tourist season. After 88 years, this pageant for beauty, brain and drive keeps evolving and will make big differences.
President and general manager for TLC Angela Shapiro-Mathes said "As viewers watch 'Miss America: Reality Check' they'll get to know the contestants in a way that they never have before. The entire competition becomes more relevant to today's audience as they vote and root for their favorites at the live finale."
"America is going to have a much greater impact than they've ever had before," said Brent Zackey, vice-president for production and development at TLC. "We thought it would be great to really make the whole scheme of the reality show about America getting to know these women and letting them focus in on the women they would vote into the finals."
Art McMaster, president of the organization revealed, he assures the pageant faithful and there would be a positive effect to the new arrangement whereupon."It helps a great deal to have such a respected and well-known title that gets you in the door, but it only gets you so far," said Johnson, who worked to raise 150 million U.S. dollars in federal funding every year for diabetes research. "The title of Miss America can work for and against you at the same time. It can get you the political meeting, but it's up to the woman to fight for credibility. It's why women who hold the position are so strong and vociferous. You learn by fire how to be."

Kelly Rutherford, Hubby Spar Over Son at Custody Hearing
Los Angeles (E! Online) – Kelly Rutherford believes her son is ready to take a bigger bite out of the Big Apple.
The visibly pregnant Gossip Girl star testified at a custody hearing Thursday that Hermés, the first of her soon-to-be two children with estranged hubby Daniel Giersch, has been going back and forth from New York to Los Angeles all his life and would have no problem living with her in NYC until her show finishes shooting at the end of March.
Giersch, meanwhile, has opposed the move, saying that he is Hermés' primary caregiver at home and has been since the child was born.
He reiterated his position today on the stand, saying that Rutherford sometimes works for as much as 12 hours a day and, when she isn't working, tends to fill her time doing things "of interest" to her.
Acknowleding that Hermés has never spent a night away from his mother, Giersch also said that Rutherford hasn't allowed him any overnight visits with his son since they split up.
Rutherford, however, estimated her work days to be more like five hours long, rather than 12, and that Giersch, too, was often away from the home doing activities "of interest" to him—like running, golfing, getting manicures and pedicures and getting his eyebrows waxed.
Despite Giersch's claim that she hasn't allowed him to keep Hermés overnight, Rutherford said, she has never withheld their son from him and is open to a joint custody arrangement.
And if Rutherford were made to choose between her career and her son, she would choose her son, she testified.
No ruling was made today and the hearing is expected to continue Friday.
"We both want what's best for our son and I guess we'll find out more tomorrow," Rutherford told reporters outside the courthouse. "It's a lot, but I am optimistic. The show has been really great and supportive and my family and friends help."
She also denied rumors that she was in danger of being written out of Gossip Girl.
Thinking about her son and the child she's expecting keeps her optimistic, Rutherford added.
"I want the best for Daniel," she said. "I want the best for our family."
Rutherford filed for divorce Dec. 30, citing irreconcilable differences, and filed additional papers earlier this month to prevent Giersch, who isn't a U.S. citizen, from taking Hermés out of the country.
